Teaching Development Funds

Teaching Development Funds are provided by the university to part-time faculty who wish to attend conferences or workshops that are directly related to the courses they teach at USF. The funds are meant to help pay for travel, lodging, and conference fees.

The Teaching Development Fund (TDF) is a contractually negotiated collective benefit available to all members of the University of San Francisco Part Time Faculty Association (PTFA) to support “adjunct professors who are pursuing work in the areas of course development, student learning, and related pedagogical issues.” The total amount of the fund is determined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

As of fall 2019, all USF schools (CAS, SONHP, SOE, and SOM) now follow the same application protocol, with the same due date and are reviewed by the same campus-wide committee that consists of part-time faculty and members of the administration.

Deadlines:
Applications are due on the first Monday after October 15 and the first Monday after February 15. Due to the Monday holiday on February 19, 2024, this year’s deadline will be Tuesday, February 20.

When applying, please consider:

• Although we encourage adjuncts to present at conferences or workshops, the main purpose for receiving these funds is to attend conferences in order to become better educators for our students. In order to be approved for funds, the application should indicate how the conference or workshop will specifically benefit your teaching of courses at USF.

• As a general rule, applications are approved for conferences or workshops within the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30). However, applications for conferences or workshops in the subsequent fiscal year may be approved subject to available funds. Thus, conferences or workshops from July through the fall TDF application period, would be applied for in the previous February TDF cycle.

• According to our CBA, travel to conferences and workshops within the United States is prioritized over international travel. That said, applications with international destinations may be approved, but the Committee will determine this on a case by case basis.
