Unemployment Information

All part-time lecturers on contingent appointments are eligible for UI benefits during all semester/quarter breaks. The best day to apply for UI benefits is the day after the last official day of your most recent academic term (see dates below). Even if you haven’t finished grading by the official end date of the term, you can nonetheless file for UI benefits as your employment has legally ended and you are no longer earning wages.

You must open a claim with California’s Employment Development Department to receive benefits.

NOTE: Claims are not retroactive. They begin ONE WEEK after you file. So, the sooner you file the better.
Use this CFT presentation for assistance; important USF-specific information is available below.

Reason No Longer Working

Category: Laid off/ No Work
Explanation: School employee between semesters, NOT likely to return
(In California, the The Cervisi decision by the CA Supreme Court legally states that part-time faculty do not have reasonable assurance of re-employment. Regardless of whether or not we are listed in the course catalog, our jobs are not secure until we receive a contract, which is usually issued after census date — roughly three weeks into each semester.)

Update Employer Information

You will need to calculate your quarterly pay. Sign in to my USF and use Workday to see your pay history. Watch this handy video on how to access your pay from MyUSF.

Recommendation: Calculate your gross pay before logging on. You may get timed out and kicked off the system if you take too long. It’s no fun to have to start over! Record this information, so you have it for future filing  periods.

The “Update Employer Details” page provides you with a second opportunity to correct the address EDD has for USF. Don’t forget to do that. (See screenshot of EDD “Employer Details” page.)

School Employee Information

The Cervisi Decision states that part-time higher education instructors are legally laid off at the end of each teaching term due to no reasonable assurance of employment. Many at USF do not receive contracts until after the semester begins. We may lose our teaching  assignments for a number of reasons – bumping from a full-time instructor or someone with higher seniority, low enrollment, financial issues, or other factors.

(See screenshot of EDD "School Employee Information" page)
